Job Background

A large number of Ghana’s forest reserves continue to be seriously threatened by illegal farm cultivation and chainsaw operations.  The EU FLEGT/VPA in Ghana has initiated several control measures to strengthen forest law enforcement and improve governance in the forestry sector. Successful implementation of Ghana’s FLEGT/VPA additionally requires a credible and well-coordinated community-led forest monitoring systems. As a response to this need, the potential role of forest dwellers in monitoring forests is beginning to gain recognition amongst forestry stakeholders with the expectation that over dependency on externally-driven models that rely heavily on third party monitors will reduce.

In collaboration with the Rainforest Foundation in the UK we have initiated the Community Real Time Monitoring Project funded by DFID that will trial systems for community-based real-time monitoring of forest activities in Ghana. The project will test opportunities to integrate such systems into governmental forest enforcement mechanisms and explore suitable community incentives, as a means of containing illegal logging and complementing government established forest/timber verification schemes.
